Established in 2009, our One Learning Community brings together Ōwhiro Bay School and the on-site Ōwhiro Bay Kindergarten in a close, supportive educational partnership. By sharing knowledge, resources, and teaching practices, we create a smooth transition and strong support network for children and whānau.
We love bringing our families together! Groups, like Parentlink, help us coordinate joint community events, fun activities, and fundraising initiatives that keep our kindergarten, school, and whānau closely connected.
Ōwhiro Bay and stream are named after the navigator Whiro, who landed the waka Nukutere there, and has been historically settled by the Kāti Māmoe, Ngāti Ira and Ngāi Tara tribes. Our kindergarten is on site at Ōwhiro Bay School to create One Learning Community where the school and kindergarten share knowledge in a partnership that is beneficial to children and families.
Our child-led programme is strongly supported by our environment. Our close links to the school, the stream and the beach are celebrated. Through connecting children with nature, we help to deepen their learning experience and create a lasting sense of place. This respect for nature and the natural world is part of our bi-cultural programme.
Our purpose-built building allows us to cater for children aged 6 months to 5 years of age. Children are encouraged to be active explorers of their environment, to learn through participation, and to be part of our community of learners.

Although Te Kāhui Tonga o Te Upoko o Te Ika, our Kāhui Ako, is no longer formally constituted, our schools continue to work collaboratively to identify and implement best practices that enhance outcomes for our tamariki. We engage in shared professional learning opportunities and maintain a strong partnership with mana whenua, Te Āti Awa. These enduring collegial relationships foster support both within and across our schools, strengthen professional networks, and enable seamless collaboration between local kura for the benefit of all learners.
